Background

Jim is 93 years of age, he lives alone with no social care support in a small bungalow in Kent. Jim has two daughters, five grandchildren and four great grand children. All of Jim's friends have sadly died and Jim rarely leaves the house except with his daughters and grandchildren. Jim is fiercely proud and refuses help from anyone except his two daughters. Jim has never been in hospital and has always been incredibly fit and independent and has no medical history. He was the primary carer for his wife until her death three years ago. Jim's daughters did all of his food shopping for him, cleaned his house and managed his finances.

Jim's daughters had noticed a decline in his mobility and had noticed that he appeared to be becoming increasingly frail. Jim agreed to use a stick for additional support when walking but maintains he is not in pain “just old”. When the subject of seeing his GP or having a level of care was raised Jim would become upset and say he was fine. Jim's daughters were concerned that he was falling and generally neglecting himself, but Jim would always deny any issues.

Jim's daughters visited him 3 times a week and phoned daily with one daughter phoning in the morning and one late afternoon. Both daughters worked full time and had children and grandchildren and lived a 30 minute drive from their father so struggled to support further. Both had asked their father to live with them following their mothers death, but Jim had refused.
